Samresh Kumar has spent the better part of two decades building businesses, leading teams, and living at full speed across India, Vietnam, and beyond. An IIT-trained engineer with an MBA from IIM Kolkata, he went on to work at world-class consultancies and build companies across three countries.
On the outside, by almost every measure, he was succeeding. On the inside, something was off. He realised, slowly and then all at once, that his elite education had prepared him brilliantly for the external game - and taught him almost nothing about the internal one.
The result of years of honest self-examination, trial, error, and reflection is 9 Principles - a book he describes not as theory, but as a lived account of nine inner principles he has tested, refined, and continues to practise every day.
Today, Samresh splits his time between his business ventures in Vietnam and Sri Lanka, writing, and working on ideas that bridge Eastern wisdom with the language of high performance.

Samresh Kumar is a passionate business builder, CEO and an astute private equity investor. Leveraging his diverse and deep global experience in multi-billion-dollar companies, investment funds and ultra-high-growth companies, he shapes the vision of an organization and then achieves it through ruthless and people-centric execution. He has built and helped build multiple successful businesses across sectors and countries. He has structured, negotiated and closed over 300 transactions, invested more than USD 2.0 billion, and raised over USD 1.5 billion in equity and debt capital.
He currently is the founder and CEO of Mega Energy, which has formed an exclusive JV with August Energy in Vietnam for an Energy-as-a-Service business. Previously, he built and exited as the Founder, Chairman and CEO of SkyX Solar — a solar developer and investor focused in Vietnam, scaling it from scratch into one of the leading renewable energy players with over 100 MWp under operation, and raising ~USD 100 million from VinaCapital and EDF Renewables.
As Managing Director at VinaCapital, a USD 3.5 billion diversified investments management group, he led private equity and platform development for its principal investments arm and set up its long-term energy investment platform. Earlier, as Executive Vice-President at Masan Group in Vietnam, he transformed the company from promoter-driven to a professionally managed listed conglomerate, growing it from USD 600 million to USD 3.5 billion in value in four years.
Earlier, Samresh was a core member of the private equity and business-building team at SUN Group (a USD 2 billion PE group across India, Russia and the UK), instrumental in building a global billion-dollar oil & gas company from inception. He also founded and managed an investment bank in India, and began his career as a management consultant with Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting).
A strong proponent of good corporate governance, Samresh is one of the few officially certified independent directors in Vietnam. His current and past board directorships span Vietnamese, Indian and Sri Lankan companies including Gene Solutions, Ambeon Group and MIT. He has been recognised with multiple honours including Solar CEO of the Year and the Master Entrepreneur Award.
Samresh holds an MBA from IIM Calcutta and a B.Tech from IIT Delhi, both with academic distinctions. He has lived and worked across Vietnam, Singapore, India, UK, USA, Russia, Sri Lanka and the Middle East, and is an active speaker, having addressed over 50 conferences in recent years. Beyond building businesses, he is passionate about sports and serving the under-privileged.
